Dream Center
High school counselors and Utah College Advising Corps (UCAC) advisors all play an important role in helping Utah high school students pursue their higher education goals. They meet with a large and diverse pool of students that come from a multitude of backgrounds within their respective schools. One segment in particular are students of undocumented status. That is, students who do not have United States citizenship or a documented immigration status, but reside and attend school despite their status.
To help bridge the gap between secondary and higher education, “The Dream Center in the Office of Undergraduate Studies works holistically with undocumented students and mixed-status families from college access to graduation.” The Dream Center wished to provide a comprehensive yet easy to access learning opportunity for high school counselors and Utah College Advising Corps to learn more about how to interact with undocumented students, the laws and policies related to college access for undocumented students, and the available financial resources.
PROBLEM/CHALLENGE
Here are examples of the pages and resources that were used for advisor and educator training. Much of the training is very verbose and text-heavy.

Training Materials Consisted of UEN/Canvas courses that were mainly text
Current training for counselors and advisors on identifying undocumented students, the laws regarding college and higher education for these students, and how to best serve this population is sporadic and long for those who do receive it. For high school counselors, there are no specific trainings that they receive in regards to undocumented students. For UCAC Advisors, there are a couple in-person training sessions for their orientations that occur once a year. There is a Canvas course that has been developed for training on working with undocumented students and assisting them with pursuing higher education but it is very long— taking over 3 hours to complete on average— and not widely accessible to the counselors and advisors who need it.
CLIENT GOALS AND NEEDS
We are tasked with two goals:
- Creating an accessible training for all high school counselors and UCAC advisors
- Making it short-form and condensed so that the materials can be covered or reviewed in a timely manner
Needs Analysis, Goals, Objectives & Subordinate Skills
The following document reviews the process for our needs analysis and the results of our testing as well as main takeaways during that process.
